Heiltsuk
oral tradition states that before the time of the great flood,
the original Heiltsuk ancestors were set down by the Creator in
the territory now referred to as the 'Central Coast of British
Columbia'.
Traditionally the Heiltsuk people lived in many villages and
seasonal camp locations throughout their territory. The Heiltsuk
First Nation has a long history of occupation and use of the Koeye.
The Koeye is pronounced "Kway" and means "bird
sitting on the water" in the native interpretation of the
Heiltsuk and Oweekeno people. This special place is considered
a centre of Heiltsuk energy.

Cultural Eco-tours
We invite you to take a guided interpretative journey into the
cultural and spiritual world of Koeye and her surrounding shores.
View pictographs (ancient stone paintings), ancient village sites
and middens.
Visit the abandoned village site of Namu, where archaeological
digs indicate over 10,000 years of continuous occupation.
In the evening, enjoy a traditional salmon barbeque
followed by a leisurely stroll across Koeye's sandy beaches to
the site of the Koeye River Science and Culture Camps.
Here
you will witness Heiltsuk youth celebrate their cultural history
and renew their spiritual connection to the land that has sustained
their ancestors for centuries.
